As we have officially shifted into spring, it's not only the perfect time to reorganize closets and dust off your ceiling fans, but it's also a great opportunity to think about tweaking your business strategy. This year, according to our guest e-news author Terri Adkisson, successful companies are working smarter, not harder, to grow their business using information and technology.

Strategic Sustainable Growth for People, Companies and Communities: How are companies using technology and information to succeed in 2010? Ask this question today, and you get a lot of confusing answers. They range from absolute prescriptions for success to doom-and-gloom tales that proclaim no positive outcomes. This article doesn't provide any magic bullets or golden eggs, but it concisely covers three key areas where companies are succeeding- and where your team can be the company heroes.

…They are leveraging and connecting people and ideas.

COMMUNITY FOCUS

At Technology Team, we think it is important to stay up-to-date with the latest trends in the data center industry. We found an interesting article by Jeffrey Clark from The Data Center Journal about data center trends. Since delving into the future of data centers can be quite time-consuming, here is the "lunch break" version:

Data Center trends are based on more than technological development; they are also driven by political and financial concerns. Today, the main concern remains in the realm of energy consumption. Using power efficiently seems to be the direction most data center professionals are taking which include

  • Transitioning to higher operating temperatures, contrary to the idea that low temperatures were best.
  • Partially or completely using outside air to cool equipment
  • Using window fans instead of CRAC units
  • Locating data center to a cooler climate to take advantage of the natural conditions

Other "conventional" trends in the data center include:

  • Co-location, which lets companies maintain their own servers in a rented space
  • Cloud computing, which severely lessens the need for IT infrastructure and management

Some trends are, of course, a natural result of those in other areas such as:

  • Defense again security (i.e. "sleeper agents" planted in data centers which could provide ill-intentioned groups with the ability to attack resources or compromise data.
  • Top-of-rack switching which lessens the amount of required fiber and centralizes administration
  • Unified computing/converged architecture which reduces infrastructure by combining computing resources into single units instead of separate boxes.

Clark maintains that future data center trends will depend mostly upon the state of the economy.

Why You Need an IT Relocation Firm vs. Movers

In speaking with many clients planning their Data Center relocations, I'm often asked what differentiates Technology Team from a moving company.

"Well, for starters, we don't have trucks and equipment." Is my response.

"How are you in the moving business if you don't have these items?" They ask.

Movers are an integral part of any relocation. A moving company's ability to provide reliable transportation, quality equipment, qualified personnel and careful handling is vital to the successful completion of any Data Center Migration.

At Technology Team, we partner with only the best moving companies to ensure that the physical handling of equipment is performed with care and efficiency. However, with Data Center migrations as our core competency, our client base can attest to the fact that the physical move is only a small portion of what transpires in the relocation of mission critical equipment.
